Course Description
This course will explore the stories in Bereishit that focus on Jacob’s life. We will open with Jacob’s flight to Haran and focus on Jacob’s life with Laban, as Jacob marries and begins to build a family while contending with the many challenges that come his way. We will follow the narrative trajectory as Jacob returns to Canaan and struggles with the mysterious man, Esau, and the locals of Shechem. In our examination, we will utilize rabbinic and medieval exegesis alongside literary techniques to mine these chapters for their theological and moral messages.
