With an eye towards the sociopolitical and historical backdrops of the time, we will analyze legal and narrative texts that shaped the formation of Israel's national identity GeneralThe Great Tora Commentators: History, Style, MethodologyDr. Avigail Rock Day: Tuesday Hours: 09:50-11:15, Hashmonaim We will study the works of five great Tora commentators: Rashi, Ibn Ezra, Rashbam, Radak, and Ramban. We will examine the historical background,cultural influences, unique style and methodolgy of each of them. Examples will generally correlate with the weekly parasha GeneralOn Covenant, Crisis and Commitment: Tracing the transformation of the ´Covenant´ from Tanach through to modern times.Tanya White Day: Tuesday Hours: 11:20-12:40, Hashmonaim This course will focus on the notion of ברית – Covenant, from a philosophical and theological point of view. We will trace its development from Tanach to contemporary times understanding its centrality in Judaism then and now. We will study the thought of modern day covenantal thinkers such as R. Yitz Greenberg, R. David Hartman, R. Jonathan Sacks, that in light of the Holocaust and the onset of modernity reassess, often radically, the meaning and implications of the covenant. General
